Prepare to visit the Firefly Sanctuary

Firefly Tlaxcala

If you are preparing to take a summer trip next year, but still don´t decide the destination, then you should consider knowing Tlaxcala as the next destination to book your airline tickets to Mexico. In this magical place, every year during the summer, the Nanacamilpa Forest is illuminated by thousands of fireflies that offer a truly impressive and unique natural spectacle, where just at sunset the fascinating dance of the fireflies begins; they do night after night, a show where these characteristic insects look for a partner to reproduce.

The species that inhabits this forest of more than 200 hectares is endemic to the region, so it was declared a Sanctuary of Fireflies. Although unlike whales or butterflies, fireflies don´t migrate, but we can only appreciate them during their mating season.

nanacamilpa Firefly

The ideal time to visit the sanctuary

The breeding season of Fireflies in the Nanacamilpa Forest occurs from mid-June to mid-August, lasts so little time because it coincides with the rainy season, which creates the ideal environment for the reproduction of the Fireflies. The most experienced travelers and local people recommend going during the first two weeks of July, since that is when you can see more fireflies, in addition, from week to week, all prices go up and there are too many people.

What to expect in your visit

There are several factors that influence to see more fireflies, factors such as rain and moonlight, to see 100% of fireflies the ideal is that it has rained to be more humid and we have new moon so there is less light. On the other hand, if it hasn´t rained for several days, it is likely that few fireflies will come out, although if there is a storm it is possible that they do not even come out. If there is a full moon it is likely that many fireflies don´t come out because any external light inhibits them, but that these factors don´t discourage you from visiting the sanctuary, because however delicate they may be, it is sure that you will see them dancing during your trip.

The best way to get there

The best option is to arrive by car and on your own, since there is no public transport to the Sanctuary, but if you don´t have any other than traveling by bus, then you will have to get to Nanacamilpa and look for some sighting center to pick you up. By car head towards Nanacamilpa and passing the town of San Felipe Hidalgo, follow the dirt road that leads to the Sanctuary, the Sanctuary of the Fireflies has 26 Sighting Centers authorized by the Ministry of Tourism. It is important that you get to one of them to do the guided tour, since they are the ones that comply with all the rules and regulations. Most of these centers have cabins and camping areas so you can sleep there without the need to move so late.

Without a doubt, this beautiful ritual will be one of the most fascinating things you can witness when you have your airline tickets to Mexico, we only recommend you to go with a lot of respect and without damaging the space.
