The apiary was established as part of the “We save the bees. Together” campaign, which aims to educate about the important role these useful insects play in human life and how important they are for the environment. The apiary will be run by Śląskie Miody – Urban Apiaries.

There are 470 species of bees in Poland. We owe the production of 1/3 of the world’s food to industrious insects. It is estimated that they pollinate as many as 71 out of 100 species of cultivated plants, thanks to them we enjoy as many as 4,000 varieties of vegetables and fruits, therefore their role in the ecosystem is very important.

By carrying pollen from flowers, these insects help conserve biodiversity and control soil erosion. In the case of garden plants, pollination of plants by them increases yields by up to 80%.

Platanowa Apiary Miodna is located in the area adjacent to the Metallurgical Park – the oldest landscaped green area in Zabrze, at a safe distance from the parking lot in the center. Green spaces in urban areas are shelters for urban fauna. A flower meadow has been arranged around the apiary in such a way as to provide the bees with flowers rich in pollen and nectar. The beehive that stands next to Platan is made of a special wood – white pine. The Carniolan breed, because of its gentle demeanor, also does very well in a backyard apiary.

– Municipal farms run by experienced beekeepers have mainly an educational function. The beekeeping location in the green area around Platan is planned to serve education and community socialization with these beneficial insects. Through the workshop, we will be able to familiarize participants with the life of bees and talk about the role all pollinating insects, not just honey bees, have for human life, the environment and our economy. Supporting local biodiversity is part of our social policy. We are aware of the difficult situation of wild animals in urban environments and the fact that some species are fleeing urban spaces. We help them because we believe that the diversity of flora and fauna is the key to maintaining the balance of the ecosystem and will have a significant impact on people’s lives in the long term

– say Agnes NizioDirector CH Platan.

The establishment of the Platanowa Honey Farm is a continuation of many years of activities aimed at increasing biodiversity in the area around the gallery. Previously, flower beds and nest boxes for birds of various sizes had been made. Their meeting was preceded by a detailed analysis of where they should be stationed. It takes into account the appropriate altitude for the bird species, as well as protection from predators and adverse weather conditions. The boxes are eagerly visited by birds during the breeding season. This year, Platan Shopping Center plans to buy a house for insects and bats.

As part of the “We save the bees. Together” campaign the NEPI Rockcastle Shopping Center cares for over two million bees that live in 12 apiaries consisting of 52 hives. More information can be found on the website https://www.cowulubzyczy.pl.
