A new blow for the “Super League” – UEFA wins in the EU courts

UEFA has received the full support of the Advocate General of the European Court that new competitions must be approved by them in advance. Hence, certain clubs’ dream of a “Super League” seems to be starting to unravel.

– FIFA and UEFA rules requiring new competitions to be approved in advance according to EU competition rules, said adviser Athanasios Rantos at the European Court of Justice in a statement.

The news that some of the biggest clubs in Europe are going to form their own “Super League” rocked the world of football.

When the league news broke, UEFA reacted strongly. UEFA and FIFA have now won the case.

“The rules of the football organizations UEFA and FIFA which give them the right to prevent clubs from joining rebel leagues and to punish players who do so are in line with EU competition rules,” a adviser to Europe’s highest court said Thursday.

Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Atlético Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid were the clubs that initiated the plan.

The club’s supporters protested and all the clubs, apart from Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid withdrew from the plan just days later.

In May, UEFA started proceedings against the three clubs for “potential breaches of UEFA’s legal framework”.

Rantos, who was an adviser to the European Court of Justice in the case, concluded that UEFA was not exercising an unfair monopoly by threatening to penalize clubs wishing to hold competitions without a license.

Odd Stemsrud is a partner at Advokatfirmaet Grette AS. He told VG that it was inconceivable that the EU Court would come to a different decision than Rantos’ proposal.

– The European Court of Justice statistically followed the Advocate General’s proposal at approx. 80% of cases. In these cases, however, it is clear that the attorney general has taken a conservative line, so it cannot be ruled out that the EU Court prefers to confirm the position of the European Commission and the General Court on the matter, rather than lawyers. the general’s proposal, Stemsrud told VG.
