AMG ONE: This is good news

We’re going back to 2017. Then Mercedes showed Project One for the first time. A truly wild hypercar – full of racing technology. Includes a hybrid driveline – taken straight from Formula 1.

But now it’s been four years – and the car has been delayed many times. The 275 customers who have bought a Mercedes tilted 28 million kroner, BEFORE taxes, have been waiting patiently. One of them is also from Norway.

Regular guest appearances have put it back on the agenda. This fall, the car was shown again in connection with the car show in Munich (see video above).

But each time it was followed by disappointing news about technical challenges and delayed production.

This time is different.

Start production

The well-informed Autocar is now writing that production will begin in the summer of next year. Finally! Not soon, many argue.

At the same time, it’s easy to understand that there are several challenges in making Formula 1 engines available for use in “regular” cars and on regular roads. For those who have lived under a rock: There are increasingly stringent emission requirements to comply with.

The V6 petrol engine taken from the car that won Formula 1 in 2017, which is capable of speeding up to 11,000 rpm and at 5,000 rpm at idle, is not particularly adapted to these requirements.

Inside, the steering wheel is the biggest indicator that the AMG ONE is truly outstanding.

When we saw this at the auto show, it came to life!

A lot of work

Therefore, the engineers at AMG have worked hard. Solve some challenges along the way, and get some new challenges. But now, according to Autocar, Mercedes has sent a letter to customers that the car will finally be launched off the production line next summer.

It must have a much more reasonable idle speed of 1,200 revolutions, at the same time operational reliability and emission requirements must be observed. The latter, among other things, through an electric range of about 25 kilometers.

But of course don’t think that there will be kittens, for that reason.

Service

In total there are FOUR electric motors that work together with the 1.6 liter V6.

This gives a total effect of over 1,000 horsepower – which of course delivers a truly wild performance. 0-100 km/h doesn’t bother spending 2.2 seconds, once. 200 km/h is served in under six seconds, while the top speed is said to be over 350 km/h.

Exactly how soon it will be is not officially confirmed. But these numbers provide a pretty straightforward clue.

Waiting for something good

And speaking of machines. You might think the four electric motors are located on separate wheels? No, that’s not the problem. One is integrated in the turbocharger, one is located directly on the internal combustion engine and connected to the crankshaft, while the last two drive the front wheels.

We’re not the only ones sitting and stumbling while we wait for this to happen. And with testing on both public roads and the Nürburgring underway, there are plenty of indications that the information Autocar has provided may be correct.

Will we see it in Norway, believe me?
