Christmas trees are given to zoo animals for entertainment and as food

Several species of animals will enjoy the trees until Sunday. On the last day of the year, there will be giraffes, gorillas, wombats or elephants. On January 1st, camels, monkeys or devils are waiting for this unusual treat.

There’s no shortage of news stories when it comes to feeding India’s elephants, for example. “It’s definitely something else for elephants. It’s more interesting because normally trees don’t get fed, so they really like it,” explains elephant keeper Monika Durlevićová.

The baby elephant will have a lot of fun with the trees.

But elephants also regard unsold conifers as entertainment, especially baby elephants who enjoy them. Out of a total of nine elephants they have at the Prague Zoo, the two youngest additions are less than three years old. “Baby elephants Amalee and Lakunu love to tug,” added the keeper.

Even bison see small trees as an element of fun.

“This is a toy for them, such an element of enrichment. Of course, they also bite it, but first of all it is a toy for them that can be moved and thrown, explains hoofed breeder Petr Fedorov.

In addition to puppies, bison also receive sweets in the form of apples. “The animals shouldn’t be given much in terms of ration. It won’t do them any good if it goes too far. So I gave them some apples. They usually get carrots,” Fedorov added.

The bison really show off with the trees in front of the visitors.

Five bison are currently kept at the Prague Zoo. The male Tipito, the female Božek, Beatrice and Omana, as well as the children born to Beatrice, are still unnamed.

Instead of quail tree

Bear-like devils also get entertainment and food at the same time during the gift giving at the zoo. They found a wicker ball with quail under a tree.

“They are marsupials and only eat meat,” explains head primate keeper David Vala. In this case, the Christmas tree is used only to accommodate the woven balls.

“They have such characteristics that whatever they find, they take it and try to take it to the hole and, above all, do not encounter other demons,” Vala told Novinkám.

Demons like bears will show how well they can communicate with each other.

Thus, visitors are treated to the sight of communication between animals, which are very loud and often aggressive when fighting over food.

“Sometimes we fight with them for food in the paddock,” said the farmer. “At the same time, we will also carry out animal examinations. We can see the animal because it is close to us,” he added.
