Norway’s U20 ice hockey team won WC at level two – ready for the elite

The Norway national U20 ice hockey team won all of their matches in division 1 WC at home. After 5-3 over Kazakhstan, the team is ready for next year’s elite WC.

There will be a meeting with the largest ice hockey nation. The Championship will be played in Gothenburg from 26 December 2023 to 5 January 2024.

Sporting president Berit Kjøll got to enjoy Norway’s fifth straight win at the tournament in the Asker stands.

After 4-0 over Slovenia, 3-2 over France, 3-2 over Hungary, and 4-1 over Denmark, Kazakhstan also went into effect. Opponents needed to win in normal time to trick Norway out of promotion, but never caught up again after Petter Vesterheim’s goal in the first period.

Gabriel Koch and Leo Halmrast made it 3-0 at half-time with a long-range shot each in extra time, but after a change of goalkeeper, Kazakhstan came back into the game.

Aldiyar Nurlan and Daniil Tsybin reduced the score before the end of the period but in between Michael Brandsegg-Nygård scored Norway’s fourth after stealing the puck from Artjom Avdejenko right in front of goal.

Isak Hansen erased the last remnants of tension with a fine wrist shot from the blue line to make it 5-2.

This year’s U20 elite WC will be held in Halifax and Moncton in Canada starting on Boxing Day.
