– The Russian war in Ukraine and many complex crises in the world overshadowed this year’s UN General Assembly. But today’s biggest challenges can only be solved together, says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

The venue for the world’s most important political meeting, UN High Level Week, takes place between 19 – 24 September 2022. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre leads the Norwegian delegation. In addition, Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt, Development Minister Anne Beathe Tvinnereim and Climate and Environment Minister Espen Barth Eide will participate.

– Norway has a strong belief in global cooperation. Norway’s quest for dialogue, peace and development is needed more than ever, said Støre.

Today’s world is characterized by much more anxiety and uncertainty than we are used to. The consequences of climate change are becoming increasingly clear. The pandemic has had a serious impact and is still ongoing in most parts of the world. The humanitarian challenge is greater than ever. Geopolitical tensions are increasing. Democratic values ​​are challenged.

– No one can solve the crisis in the world alone. The challenges in the world are connected, influencing and strengthening each other. The only way forward is respect for international law and international cooperation, said Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt.

Norway’s policy is rooted in the UN’s sustainability goals, climate goals and human rights.

– It is important to show that Norway takes seriously the economic challenges facing the world today, and that we still care about what is happening outside Europe, said Development Minister Anne Beathe Tvinnereim.

During the high-level week, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre will, among other things, chair the Ocean Panel meeting, contribute to a global alliance that will ensure more renewable energy for developing countries and deliver Norway’s keynote address to the UN General Assembly. He will also conduct a number of meetings with heads of government from other countries and international organizations.

Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt will chair the donor countries group for Palestine (AHLC) meeting, participate in the Security Council meeting in Ukraine and meet with the foreign ministers of several countries.

Development Minister Anne Beathe Tvinnerreim will attend the UN education summit and co-host the meeting on food security.

Climate and Environment Minister Espen Barth Eide will chair the High Ambition Coalition meeting to end plastic pollution by 2040 and invite the US to a meeting on an international alliance against natural crimes.

– International cooperation is the main prerequisite for solving the climate and nature crisis, said Minister of Climate and Environment Espen Barth Eide.

Norway is also participating in the preparatory summit ahead of the United Nations Conference on Biodiversity (COP15).

There will also be many meetings with other countries and organizations. This includes other members of the Security Council and various actors in peace diplomacy, protection of civilians, women, peace and security and climate and security. In addition, Norway will meet with parties from countries that are on the agenda of the Security Council and countries that we rarely meet, including those from the southern part of the world.
