UN dives into Rubiales case: It’s not hard not to kiss someone
On Monday, the UN Secretary-General was embroiled in a dispute surrounding Spanish soccer president Luis Rubiales and his controversial kiss at the World Cup.
Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary General António Guterres, called on Spanish authorities on Monday to tackle sexism “in a way that respects the rights of all female athletes”.
The call came after soccer president Rubiales kissed national team’s Jenni Hermoso on the mouth during the recent World Cup victory celebrations in Australia.
– How hard it is not to kiss someone on the mouth, says UN spokesman Dujarric.
He continued, sexism is a critical issue that must be observed in sports.
Jennifer Hermoso described Rubiales’ kiss, which nearly turned Spain upside down, as “an impulsive, macho act, out of place and without any kind of consent on my part.”
Football president Rubiales, for his part, insisted there was an agreement. Before the weekend, he had refused to step down from his post.
Spain’s prosecutor’s office said on Monday it had opened a preliminary investigation into sexual abuse following the incident. (NTB)
