The Spanish national team manager is confident he can continue despite the chaos
Montse Tome feels confident that he will be able to maintain his position as coach of the Spanish women’s national football team.
Despite the terrible atmosphere and threats of a boycott against the national team, Spain’s World Cup winner impressed on the pitch after winning World Cup gold this summer. In the two matches played in the national league, the first was a 3-2 away win over Sweden, and on Tuesday they won 5-0 over Switzerland at home in Cordoba.
Of course things won’t be like this. Ahead of the Sweden match, there was a long line of players who indicated they would not play for the national team until there were changes in the Spanish Football Association.
It comes after now-deceased football president Luis Rubiales kissed player Jennifer Hermoso on the mouth when trophies were handed out after World Cup gold was secured this summer.
Monte Tome put many of the boycotting players to sleep when he still had many of them out for the aforementioned match against Sweden.
The player boycott was called off by most players when the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said there would be immediate and major changes in the association’s structure.
After the match against Switzerland, he described the last week as “unusual”.
– The players are 100 percent professional. “Now we will enjoy this victory and come out strong in the next meeting,” said Tome when asked if he felt he had the confidence of the players. (NTB)
