At the end of the year, Kateřina Majerová, director of Děčín Zoo, will resign at her own request. He has led the zoo since 2007 and worked there since 1997. Therefore, the city government is preparing a selection process for his position. The new director will be chosen by the commission, city spokesman Luděk Stínil said.
“I decided to stop for health reasons. It was a difficult and long decision, it was very difficult for me to leave,” said Majerová. “I am very proud of the zoo, as well as its entire staff,” he added. According to Majerová, the zoo is doing well, even managing to survive the difficult times of the pandemic, when the zoo had to close. “We have implemented many new things and I know that I will hand over the zoo to my successor in good condition. It’s time to think about myself and my health,” he added, adding that he had wanted to stop for a few years. ago.
Majerová submitted a request to be removed from her post as zoo director in August. At the first council in October, the city council member noted his resignation. If a new director does not take office by January 1, 2024 following a selection process, the board will appoint zoologist Roman Řehák to manage the zoo. The city management appreciated Majerová’s long-term work. “He deserves the greatest thanks and respect. He is a recognized expert and it will be very difficult to find an adequate replacement,” said Mayor Jiří Anděl (ANO) about the director’s departure.
The Zoological Park at the Shepherd’s Wall in Děčín was opened in 1949. Today, the park hosts around 450 animals from more than 150 species. The main goal is the breeding of rare and little-known animal species. Paradise Islands is a separate exposition of the Děčín Zoo. Across four floors, they offer visitors unique views of specific world regions as well as animal and plant species. 133,968 visitors visited Děčín Zoo last year.
