The NFF is concerned about EU action on rubber pellets – and has asked the authorities for help
The Norwegian Football Association (NFF) wants political support because they believe the transition period from a ban on the use of rubber pellets on artificial grass pitches is too short.
The EU is holding a meeting on Tuesday where a proposal to ban granules defined as loose microplastics (rubber granules) will be discussed. Then it will be processed by the European Commission. The EU has proposed that the transition period should be six years after the ban.
NFF Secretary General Karl-Petter Løken argues that greener alternatives are still not good enough.
– It is not sustainable to gamble with activities offered to the younger generation. We are already facing a critical situation with 70 percent of the lines being built, and only 20 percent of the lines built between 2008 and 2012 having been rehabilitated. We therefore ask for political support for the EU system for a transition period of 10 to 12 years, Løken said in a pers conference.
The association has expressed its concerns to the Ministry of Climate and Environment, the Ministry of Culture and Equality, and the Norwegian Environment Agency in a letter, writing, among other things, that implementing such measures takes time and costs.
