During an away meeting of the Slovak government, Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot in the town of Handlova, about 150 km from Bratislava. Fico is considered in many circles to be a pro-Russian and Eurosceptic politician, and his statements attracted attention. Robert Fico was born on September 15, 1964 in Topolczany i has been present in the politics of our neighbors to the south for years. Initially he studied as a lawyer: in 1982-1986 he studied at the Faculty of Law of Comenius University in Bratislava, and then completed his doctoral studies in criminal law at the Institute of State and Law of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The Prime Minister of Slovakia founded the Social Democracy party (SMER) in 1999, thanks to which he became Prime Minister of Slovakia for the first time in 2006. He held the position until 2010 – he resigned after failing to form a coalition. Two years later, the SMER party gained support that allowed it to form its own government. Interestingly, Robert Fico also ran for president of Slovakia a year later, but lost in the second round to Adrej Kiska.
In 2018, Robert Fico resigned after the scandal that broke out regarding the murder of journalist Jan Kuciak. Regarding allegations of corruption and abuse of power during the government of the SMER Party led by Robert Fico.
