Let’s thank Putin for changing Europe

In fact, one should thank Vladimir Putin for this. His absurd, murderous and criminal decision to invade Ukraine in just a few weeks ended Sweden’s 200-year history and Finland’s 100-year history of neutrality. Putin’s cleric predecessor, Vladimir Lenin, once said that for decades nothing interesting could happen in world politics, but then within weeks, decades did. Putin has just proved that Lenin was right.

– On February 23, I opposed our entry into NATO because I was afraid of Russia – a Helsinki taxi driver told me yesterday. – On February 24, I really want us to join NATO, because I am afraid of Russia.

After the invasion began, Europe changed in ways that were unimaginable six months ago. One of the best symptoms of this change was the entry of Finland and Sweden into NATO. This is great news for Poland too. Two very stable democracies with small, but well-prepared and motivated armies – experienced in clashes with Russia, in the case of Finland directly, in the case of Sweden during the Cold War offensive – made the Alliance better and more efficient overnight.

The two countries fulfilled their words once. Both support the pursuit of freedom. The two of them would become great allies of Poland.

That is why the Polish parliament should be the first to ratify the acceptance of the two countries into the Alliance as soon as possible. This would be a great sign of European solidarity in the face of Russian aggression.
