The national symbol of Ukraine featured on the statue of Yoshta in the center of Brno is a thorn in the side of some passers-by. When the yellow-blue color appeared on the artwork in support of the colonized country, a group of patriots first tried to cover it with the Czech tricolor. Now a pair of men tore the flag from the shield completely.

Brno police officers resolve a dispute over the Ukrainian flag on the equestrian statue in Moravské náměstí. During a routine check, the patrol saw two men in their fifties who decided to remove the yellow-blue state symbol. In addition, the men adorn Brno’s famous spear with three Czech colors.

One of them climbed the stairs and, following instructions from others present, lowered the flag, which he finally managed to do.” said a spokesperson for the City of Brno Police for Drbna Jakub Ghanem.

After the patrol approached the pair, they found that the eyelets and rubber on the torn cover were damaged. However, according to Ghanem, the final damage cannot yet be said. “We are waiting for a statement on whether there was any damage to the artwork itself. In the evening when the incident occurred, no administrator was able to confirm it.” he added. Officers submit the case to the administrative process.

The city police in Brno faced a similar situation two months ago. But the group that decided to take action against the symbolic support of Ukraine at the time was more moderate and simply stuck the Czech flag over the yellow-blue flag. One of the proponents justified the move by saying that Brno belongs to the Czech Republic and Jošt is Czech, not Ukrainian.

The statue of Moravian Margrave Jošt, located on Moravian Brno Square, has just been decorated with the Czech flag. The state symbol appears on the sovereign shield, which has been yellow-blue since the start of the war in Ukraine in support of the invaded country.

“We don’t like the fact that most of the Ukrainian flags are flying all over Brno and people are even vandalizing monuments to demean events in Ukraine, for example spraying Red Army monuments with hearts in Ukrainian colours,” he communicated and at the same time stated that he condemned the current conflict in Ukraine.
