Daniel Passent was born on April 28, 1938 in Stanisławów in the family of a nurse and agronomist. “My childhood was amputated. From an early age I was reconciled to the fact that I did not have parents, or rather that they were dead, did not exist, that I do not even remember them” – he told Jan Ordyński in 2011. The columnist does not have memories related to their parents, because during the occupation they hid separately for safety. Daniel passed by several Polish families, he was hidden for a long time in the Praga district of Warsaw. “The Poles and the Jews saved me, and the Poles betrayed my parents; both are Polish citizens” – he wrote in the column “Until allowed” on February 6, 2018.

He was raised by his uncle, Jakub Prawin, a communist activist, incl. head of the Polish Military Mission in Germany. He studied at St. Petersburg, Princeton, Harvard and the University of Warsaw.

He began his journalistic activities in 1954, writing for “Sztandar Młodych”, while still a student at the University of Warsaw. From 1959, he was associated with the weekly “Polyka”, where he worked as a correspondent for the Vietnam War and a columnist. He has also collaborated with cabarets, incl. “Pod Egidą” and “Dudek”, in which he writes sketches and monologues.

In the early 1960s, he obtained the rights to publish the diary of Adolf Eichmann, a Nazi German-Austrian criminal responsible for the extermination of the Jews during World War II. Polityka was one of the first magazines to publish Eichmann’s memoirs.

From 1971, Passent was associated with Agnieszka Osiecka, with whom he had a daughter – Agata. “I cooked, cleaned, washed, ironed and did everything the nanny did, because Agnieszka had no manual or culinary skills” – she recalls. After parting with Osiecka, who left his daughter in his care, he met his wife, with whom he remained until his death – Marta Dobromirska-Passent.

In 1996-2001 he was the Polish ambassador to Chile. Since 2012, he has hosted his own program “Guests of Passenta” on TOK FM radio. He is the author of several books, including: “Bywalec”, “Battle under the hat”, “Obywatelu, don’t be angry”, “Daily wars” (reports from the Vietnam War), “God comes to Munich” (reports from the Summer Olympics) 1972), “I took the senator” (report from the US), “Diplomatic illness” (memory from Chile), “Eye Opener” (2005 note), “Passa” (river interview conducted by Jan Ordyński ).

In his book, “Dzieła rozebrane” (2013), Passent talks about his column backstage. Through the prism of this short, satirical text, journalists talk about their heroes – incl. Andrzej Wajda, Ryszard Kapuściński – and the time of writing. Columnist Jan Wróbel asked him about the secrets of the workshop. The last book “In 80 years around Poland” was published in 2018.
