Goalkeeper error spoils strong English twist – much-needed win against Germany

Premier League stars Ilkay Gündogan and Kai Havertz each scored one goal in the first half of the second half and look set to deal another heavy blow to England in their warm-up ahead of the play-offs in Qatar. Then the fight really flared up.

The superb finish of the game gave the England team a solid and long-awaited breeze on the World Cup sails, even if the win passed by.

First, Manchester United defender Luke Shaw appeared at the back post and reduced the deficit to 1-2. Substitute Bukayo Saka and Mason Mount then combined nicely, before the substitute scored the equalizer from distance. Then there’s a quarter of an hour left to play at Wembley.

Suddenly the home side appeared more solid than a long time ago, and England continued to press Germany.

Beautiful penalty kick

Nine minutes before full time, the situation turned into a fact when the referee had to have VAR help to reveal the penalty awarded to Jude Bellingham in a duel with the German defender.

From the chalk mark, Harry Kane was icy cold. The Tottenham forward swung the ball hard into a cross behind Germany goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.

– He is the best in the world at penalty kicks, Harry Kane. No doubt. No goalkeeper in world history has saved him, says TV 2 commentator Simen Stamsø Møller of the penalty.

The score became Kane’s number 51 in the England national team uniform.

Whale roars

Then the match seemed to be decided, but it wasn’t. Shortly after leading England, England goalkeeper Nick Pope produced a weak rebound on the finish and gave Kai Havertz the chance to equalise. The German thanked him for the offer and attacked.

Pope has been given his chance in the England goal as a result of the injured Jordan Pickford’s first choice. However, Everton’s last chance is to be ready for the Qatar World Cup.

Until Monday’s game, things were not right for England in the Nations League. Relegation to level two was clear ahead of the game against Germany at Wembley. There, Gareth Southgate’s crew had to stand up and create optimism ahead of the upcoming World Cup finals.

They finally did that. The 3-3 result also means England have gone six games in the Nations League without a single win.

Stone injury

Manchester City defender John Stones also left Monday’s game with a hamstring injury.

Eight minutes left in the first half when the Premier League profile picked up the back of his thigh after running forward on the pitch. Then he sat on the grass.

Italy are group winners in the English Nations League group after beating Hungary 2-0 on Monday. Giacomo Raspadori and Federico Dimarco scored.
