Silly reality shows are on the decline. Now we are looking for positive stories

MasterChef, Love Island, The whole country is baking, Congratulations. Are reality shows the bottom of human entertainment? Or have they changed and served as tools for understanding what would otherwise be foreign to us? With the emergence of a new series of popular TV entertainment, we cover reality TV on the Kulturák podcast.

“Reality show is a format that has existed since the early days of television. They started appearing in the late 1940s. But the golden era came in the 1990s,” says Jana Patočková, an expert on taken words.

It divides reality shows into subcategories: dating, competition or so-called makeovers, where the lives of the contestants are remade. Either by asking a group of make-up artists to change clothes and change their style (Naked You’re Beautiful), apartment (Welcome to Home) or car (Pimp My Ride).

What else will you hear at Kulturák today?

  • What is Jane’s favorite reality show?
  • How did it feel to help shoot the legendary reality show Big Brother?
  • And why should you look forward to new books by Sally Rooney, Anna Cima or Patrik Banga?

“The best reality shows are those that don’t rely on human quirks, but that give viewers the feeling that the world is actually still okay,” thought Jana. So no Wife Exchange, which the sociologist Irena Reifová spoke of a few years ago he wrotethat it’s about “shaming the poor”.

More like a show like Queer Eye, where a group of protagonists travels the world helping people.

“This is a reality show with a script, but I still feel a touch of humanity there. Whether it’s artificial or not. I like to be impressed. Now is the time we want to see positive news. A great example is Peche zjela zeme, a format that will warm your heart.”

And what do reality shows really need to be successful? Only one thing really. You’ll find out which is which in this special episode of the Kulturák podcast, which deals with TV’s biggest quirks, but also the most touching “true” stories from the screen.
