Poland wants the German government to approve the delivery of 14 Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. Mateusz Morawiecki said that our country has donated 250 tanks and the Polish Leopard will not break the jungle of war. Therefore, he stressed, other countries should also decide to send modern tanks to Ukraine.
Mateusz Morawiecki on CNN: Many German politicians are stuck in a previous era
– It’s not just a matter of allowing or not allowing. A very important issue was whether the Germans would finally give up their share of artillery, and especially the heavy and modern tanks. This is the most important question. These 14 extra tanks out of the 250 already donated don’t change the game. But if France, and especially Germany and some other countries give 20-30 tanks, it could make a difference for Ukraine – said Morawiecki. He added that Germany was delaying the delivery of the tanks because many of the country’s politicians were still stuck in the “previous era”. As he stated, Germany put everything into one basket called “Russian gas”. Now they must reinvent themselves. And that’s why they’ve been slow and procrastinating and not fully supportive – he said.
The Wall Street Journal reported informally this week that Germany would not agree to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine until the US had sent its tanks there.
So far, Poland has announced the transfer of the Leopard company to Ukraine. The United Kingdom also joined the international coalition, declaring its readiness to send a squadron of Challenger 2 tanks and Bulldog fighting vehicles.
Olaf Scholz: A profound turning point in German foreign policy
Chancellor German Olaf Scholz assured Wednesday in Davos that his country will continue to support Ukraine, also militarily. However, during a speech at the World Economic Forum, the head of Germany line avoided the topic of the surrender of the German Leopard 2 tanks to Kiev.
Olaf Scholz simply pointed out that Germany is one of the largest suppliers of military aid to Ukraine. We continue to supply Ukraine with large quantities of weapons in close consultation with our partners. These are the IRIS-T anti-aircraft system or the Patriot anti-missile system, as well as armed infantry fighting vehicles. This marked a deep turning point in Germany’s foreign and security policy, said the head of the German government.
Meanwhile, in the resolution adopted today, the European Parliament requests the Chancellor of Germany to deliver Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine without delay.
