Piotr Wawrzyk said during discussions in the Senate that the accession of these countries to the Alliance is good for Poland and Europe, as well as for global security. The Deputy Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs thanked the ambassadors of Finland and Sweden, explaining that the decision of their countries was a turning point that changed the geopolitics of the Baltic Sea region, and consequently Poland as well.
During the debate, Deputy Minister of National Defense and Senator PiS Wojciech Skurkiewicz explained that Finland and Sweden are strategic countries from the point of view of Poland’s security. He stressed that the decision of these countries to join NATO is a historic step that has been long awaited by our country and the North Atlantic Alliance.
According to the senator of the Polish People’s Party, Kazimierz Ujazdowski, the decisions of Finland and Sweden were an act of internal Western powers. He recalled that although both countries have been members of the European Union for many years, they do not belong to NATO for several reasons. He stated that the change of decision testifies to the vitality of the Western world.
In early July, the law on the ratification of Finland and Sweden to NATO was adopted by the Sejm. Now the bill will go to the president.

Lithuania agrees
Lithuania also ratified a protocol on this issue on Wednesday. Lithuanian politicians argue that thanks to their military capabilities and high standards of democracy, Finland and Sweden’s accession to NATO will strengthen security both in the region and throughout the North Atlantic Alliance. Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvydas AnuĊĦauskas said before the vote in the Lithuanian Sejm that the involvement of these countries in collective defense would ensure the security of the Baltic states. – The larger the security zone, the less freedom an authoritarian and totalitarian regime has, said the head of the Ministry of Defense.
Sweden and Finland’s decision was a reaction to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. In May, the two countries officially signed up to join NATO. Now they were waiting for each of the 30 Allies to approve it.
So far, the protocol has been ratified by Poland, Canada, Denmark, Norway, IcelandEstonia, United Kingdom, Albania, Germany, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Bulgaria, Latvia, Slovenia and Croatia.
