Arsenal backed head coach Mikel Arteta’s comments about the refereeing in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle and called on the Referees Association to raise standards.

– Arsenal gives its wholehearted support to Mikel Arteta’s comments following more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday night, the club wrote on its account website.

– The Premier League is the best league in the world with the best players, coaches and supporters. Everyone deserves better. The Referees Association (PGMOL) must immediately improve performance standards, continued the London club.

Arsenal suffered their first league defeat of the season in a 0-1 tie. The winning goal came after just over an hour of play when Anthony Gordon poked the ball into the open net.

The video referee tool VAR had to be used and examined three different episodes leading up to the goal.

– It would be a shame if the goal stood. We say the Premier League is the best league in the world. I’ve been in this country for 20 years, and now I’m embarrassed. This is still far from the level we expected. “I’m embarrassed to be here,” Arteta told the BBC on Saturday.
