The championship dream is over for Vålerenga
Real Madrid crushed Vålerenga’s hopes of progressing to the Champions League group stage. The home team had some good chances, but had a tough starting point even before the start, after they lost 2-1 away from home.
The Spanish team was much more effective in front of goal and won 3-0 in front of a crowd of 6,341 in East Oslo. Thus, Real Madrid is ready for the group stage after a 5-1 aggregate.
French national team player Sandie Toletti more or less rolled the ball into the goal in the 29th minute. Naomie Feller put the visitors ahead 2-0 midway through the second half. The final score was determined by Athenea del Castillo who scored five minutes into extra time.
– They were better than us, they scored chances, we didn’t, Olaug Tvedten told NRK.
The 23-year-old hit the ball against the crossbar after handballing Real Madrid outside the 16-yard box early in the first half.
– It’s a bit sad that it went by and didn’t go in. If we had scored, the game would have looked very different.
Coach Nils Lexerød told NRK that there was a feeling of disappointment at failing.
– We sincerely believe that we can do it, and you could also say that the 5-1 result shows that we are still far away. There was also some margin early in the game here, meaning we showed we weren’t too far away. I hope this inspires everyone in Vålerenga to want more.
In the final minutes, Elise Thorsnes had a great chance to give Vålerenga a consolation goal, but she did not succeed in getting the ball into the goal area.
– I think the result depends a little on what the match is like, he said.
Vålerenga’s dream of chasing Brann into the group stage is over, but the team has at times come up against a gallery of stars from the Spanish capital.
