Donald Tusk’s bad relationship with the Beavers and his heavy support of Myrch’s home state budget with public money are two very dangerous problems for the current administration. These things can harm him more than just breaking the law or inappropriate behavior during a flood.
Most of the population does not have the time or inclination to follow political events systematically. Many people find politics disgusting, so they ignore most politics-related news. They only open their eyes and ears around the election. It seems obvious, but knowledge about this has not yet fully reached those who are politically active. That is, for those who carry it out – both those in power and those in opposition. Also to those who describe and comment on it – the media world. In recent years, the world of politics has evolved significantly thanks to the Internet. Social media has activated the activities of hundreds of thousands of people. But they are still a minority compared to the millions of citizens who, even though they vote, do not want to think about everyday politics.
The first – politicians, media, active internet users – are called bubbles. That is, something that functions apart from the millions of masses, although passive every day, but determines in the final election who will rule and who will lose power. The world outside the bubble is not happy with what active participants and political observers are excited about. Political news reaches the world outside the bubble with delays and often in highly altered forms. This means that the perpetrators of the scandal will not be immediately punished, which could have a significant impact on the election results.
However, from time to time there are exceptions to the above rule. This is what happened to the beavers threatened by Donald Tusk. He admitted that he immediately realized his mistake and tried to correct it. But it was too late. The world outside the bubble heard the announcement of the murder of cute furry animals, but it didn’t reach there the news that Tusk had abandoned his bloody plans. In the world outside the bubble, memes and jokes about Tusk’s war with the beavers began to circulate and be reproduced.
The second bad news for the government is that something similar happened with reports about the financial ingenuity – to put it mildly – of the pair of MPs Kinga Gajewska and Arkadiusz Myrcha. The world outside the bubble has taken notice and reacted as it did to the Beavers. The Myrcha tribe could only blame themselves. And not even because they are considered hypocrites, because for years they have condemned the right wing for their alleged greed and theft. Their duplicity is noticed more by the bubble than by the world outside it. There is a story about the greed and cunning of people who fell into a trough. For a long time, the Myrchs willingly took on the role of celebrities. A young and handsome husband and wife with three young children passionately reveal their personal lives. They seek popularity through tabloids and portals, not just gossip sites. They came out of the political circle and now the world that doesn’t follow the latest developments knows about their special life. No more explanations or expressions of support can help them. Ordinary people have no chance of getting the bonuses that Myrcha takes advantage of. This would follow them for the rest of their political lives.
Radio DJs are already making jokes about the Myrches. The power of this story is such that even pop culture cannot ignore it. The general rule in Polish pop culture is that you should mock the far-right, and jokes about established politicians should be rare and subtle. But, Myrch’s (and the otter’s) case is so spectacular that it’s hard to pretend to the audience that it didn’t happen. Of course, the sacred duty of Polish cabaret artists is to repeat hackneyed jokes about Jarosław Kaczyński a thousand times. But the problem of Myrch and the beaver can’t be resolved too quickly, so some of the jokes have to be repeated here too. Media coverage of Tusk’s government will soon return, but a temporary suspension of his administration this time will do damage. Difficult to repair. And it’s hard to forget.
