One of his recommendations regarding changes to the current method of administering elections includes the argument that electoral silence should be implemented only on voting days and only at polling stations. It is not yet certain whether these changes will be implemented and when these changes will come into effect. For now, Polish citizens must follow the provisions we have known for years. As “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna” reminds us, election silence is the time before voting day during which election campaigns and the dissemination of information regarding the elections are prohibited. “During this period, it is not permitted to hold meetings, organize marches, give speeches or publish election materials.” – explains the daily. As intended by the legislators, this prohibition is intended to avoid the influence of manipulation or pressure on voters in the final hours before voting.
Can we talk about politics during the election lull?
In practice, this means so Election silence in 2024 will be imposed 24 hours before voting day and will last until it officially ends. As explained by Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, the rules for observing electoral silence are specified in Art. 107 of the Criminal Code which states that elections are prohibited, which means:
- distributing election materials,
- share election poll results,
- meeting cannot be held,
- organize marches and demonstrations,
- make a speech.
What’s important, This prohibition also applies to the distribution of election materials on the Internet. During the election quiet period, it is prohibited to publish on websites and share material about candidates on social media platforms.

Apart from speaking publicly about candidates, election programs, parties and political preferences, inscriptions, symbols, images or signs may not be displayed on voting day, including on clothing that conveys views on political or social issues. As pointed out by “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna”, art. Article 24 of the Criminal Code stipulates that violations of the election ban can be subject to fines ranging from PLN 20 to PLN 5,000. zloty. Disclosure of poll results during the election quiet period will result in a fine of PLN 500,000. PLN up to PLN 1 million.
