– If Ruud wins, it may be the greatest achievement in Norwegian sport.
That’s what mountain legend and sports fan Kjetil André Aamodt had to say in front of the Norwegian sports-loving super Sunday.
– I have to pinch my arm. What happened, like? asked golf expert Per Haugsrud.
Because this Sunday is really something extraordinary.
Golf prodigy Viktor Hovland would go out and hunt for victory in the European Tour’s flagship tournament, and thus be rewarded with top rankings on the entire European Tour. Hours later, tennis player Casper Ruud begins his US Open final, where a Grand Slam title and world number one status are up for grabs.
Moreover, they can make a total of almost NOK 40 million.
– It is almost strange that little Norway should join them in the same generation. Especially if you include Erling Braut Haaland, Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Magnus Carlsen as well, said Haugsrud.
– One of the most difficult things to dominate
He explains that we are talking about a giant sport with a Norwegian boy among the protagonists.
– If I put this one kroner ten years ago, I would be the richest in the world, said Haugsrud with a laugh.
Aamodt agrees that the show is the best:
– Tennis and golf, in my eyes, are some of the most difficult to master individually. In addition, we have Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Erling Braut Haaland and Magnus Carlsen who are at the top in very big sports like running, football and chess, says a former medal wholesaler in alpine skiing.
– There are a lot of good people in Norwegian sport at the moment. We might as well win 16 Olympic gold medals in Beijing,” concluded Aamodt.
Will this be the Norwegian sports day of all time?
– The so-called sports marvel of Norway
And he was absolutely right. The Winter Olympics boast a medal record and international recognition. Sports historian Matti Goksøyr doesn’t think it’s easy to rank this Super Week compared to other major sports days.
– It is impossible to compare sporting achievements in that way. But if Ruud and Hovland win, of course it will be huge, he said, and continued:
– Especially since tennis and golf are still non-Norwegian sports. At the same time, there is a sport with great international interest and a lot of money involved.
Goksøyr believes that Hovland and Ruud’s wins will be a continuation of the so-called Norwegian sporting marvel that began in the 1990s.
– This means that we are not only asserting ourselves in traditional winter sports, but also in football, athletics and beach volleyball, and now gradually in tennis and golf, explains historians.
- PS: Hovland starts the final round at 15.40. The Casper Ruud final will be played at 10pm.
