Hovland led the European Tour’s flagship event at Wentworth before the final day on Sunday, but ended up finishing in a disappointing fifth place with a total of minus 14.
Shane Lowry of Ireland won the tournament with a score of minus 17 overall ahead of Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy of Spain with minus 16.
– I am the happiest man in the world right now, Lowry said in an interview broadcast by Viasport after the round, adding that he is playing golf in his life right now.
– Didn’t see this coming
Lowry thus played 54 holes in the European Tour’s flagship tournament at Wentworth without a single bogey on the scorecard.
Viktor Hovland, who went through Sunday’s round with a minus two, was never able to make an impact on the final day in London.
– I didn’t see this coming, and he played in the first two rounds, said Viaplay commentator Joakim Mikkelsen.
– That driver at night
Hovland himself was disappointed. In an interview with Eurosport, he described the last round as frustrating.
– I lost by three shots and felt that the game was good enough to win. The driver was all night today, Hovland told Eurosport.
He joked that the drivers used on Sundays quickly found their way into the pile of trash.
– I’ll take him out of the game next week and find another one. “I don’t think it will stay in the bag for very long,” he said of gallows humor.
It was from the tee that the Norwegian screwed himself up on the final day of the tournament.
Several times he dragged the ball too far to the left and gave himself a difficult starting point.
– What is going on
Already on the fourth hole you can see a taste of what is to come. An imprecise shot to the left ended in the woods, which meant that the ball could not be found and Hovland received a penalty kick.
On hole 13, for the third time on Sunday, there was an imprecise tee shot that went too far to the left. Then the 24 year old couldn’t hide his own frustration.
– What happened, said a frustrated Hovland after the show.
Viaplay commentator Mikkelsen was surprised that Hovland struggled with drama on Sunday.
– That there were some rough mistakes like that, that he suddenly struggled with a left hit from the tee, which he’s not used to, Mikkelsen said along the way.
– No, please
Hovland also has a lot of sticks along the way. On hole nine, for example, he saw the possibility of a birdie disappear as the ball slipped down the hole and rolled 180 degrees in the worst possible way.
– No, please, did you see? One of the roughest cup rounds we’ve seen all week, said Viaplay commentator Mikkelsen.
The tournament itself was pretty good overall for Hovland. He opened with a solid round on Thursday, Friday’s round was canceled due to the Queen’s death, but Hovland kept his flow and kept his lead on Saturday. Unfortunately for 24 years, it didn’t quite last until Sunday.
– A tiring and forgotten day for Viktor, sums up Viaplay commentator Mikkelsen.
Kristian Krogh Johannessen recorded minus one in the round and finished a total of minus nine after Sunday’s round. That goes for joint 32nd place.
