Leaders of Spanish football in a joint statement: Requesting President Rubiales to resign immediately
Leaders of the regional confederation of Spanish football asked football president Luis Rubiales to resign immediately due to the controversial World Cup incident.
On Monday evening, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) published a joint statement from the regional leaders of Spanish football. The statement was the result of an emergency meeting announced in the Rubiales case.
“Following recent events and unacceptable behavior which has damaged the reputation of Spanish football, the president requests that Luis Rubiales immediately announce his retirement as president of the RFEF,” the statement read.
Furthermore, it is encouraged to carry out what is referred to as a “total and fast organizational restructuring of strategic positions in RFEF to open space for new management”.
Regional confederation leaders also asked interim president of football Pedro Rocha to immediately withdraw communications sent to UEFA and FIFA on behalf of the confederations on Monday.
The latest is that the confederation management asked the European Football Association to freeze its own confederation for violating the rules of political interference in football.
Several members of the Spanish government have in recent days spoken out over the Rubiales case and put pressure on unions. UEFA regulations state that political authorities must not have the opportunity to influence decisions in sport.
FIFA itself has suspended Rubiales for 90 days while they investigate the matter.
