The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated: thanks to Executive Vice President Timmermans for his many years of hard work for the Commission and European citizens and accepts his resignation with immediate effect,” the European Commission said.
“The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, decided to entrust the role of Executive Vice President of the European Green Deal to Vice President Marosz Shefczovicz. They also decided to temporarily entrust Vice President Shefczowicz with responsibility for climate policy until a new Commission member from the Netherlands is appointed,” we read in a press statement.
Frans Timmermans was one of the members of the European Commission who spoke out loudest about the PiS government in the context of the rule of law dispute in Poland. Let us recall that the politicians of the Union of the Right repeatedly criticized Timmermans and made it a point of honor for – as they called him – the “anti-Polish” official not to become chairman of the European Commission. Ultimately, this function was taken over by Ursula von der Leyen in 2019.
