Hamilton removes nose piercing after conflict with Formula 1 management
The bitter feud between Lewis Hamilton and Formula 1 leader Niels Wittich has ended after Lewis Hamilton removed his nose piercing ahead of this weekend’s race.
The conflict between Hamilton and the director of racing at Formula 1, Niels Wittich, has been going on since the World Cup round in Australia earlier this season. Now Hamilton has turned around.
“So fed up with everything going on in the world that this is what people spend their energy on,” he said before this weekend’s Grand Prix.
The reason for the conflict is that the British Formula 1 star has been competing with nose piercings and earrings for several seasons, despite the fact that body piercing has been banned in Formula 1 since 2004.
“I have no plans to remove it,” said the 37-year-old after the Melbourne Grand Prix.
Wittich has stated that a stabbing ban has been introduced to protect drivers given the fact that there is nothing to prevent them from quickly leaving the car in an emergency.
International Motorsport Federation (FIA) rules state that “the use of body piercing jewelry or metal necklaces is prohibited during competition and can therefore be checked before starting”.
Hamilton could have been fined for continuing to pierce. (NTB)
