Haaland was named the best sportsperson of the year in the world by the BBC
Erling Braut Haaland was awarded the award as the world’s best sportsman of the year by the BBC
BBC wrote on X/Twitter.
– I’m sorry that I couldn’t attend, but thank you very much for choosing me as the world’s best athlete of the year. Last season was amazing with “The Treble”. Once again, thank you very much, said Haaland in a video published by the BBC.
Jærbuen was nominated along with Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen, tennis star Novak Djokovic, Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmatí, American gymnast Simone Biles and South African rugby player Siya Kolisi.
The awards have a long tradition, and the BBC awards are held in high regard. This award has been given since 1960.
It is Lionel Messi who won the prestigious BBC award in 2022. A year earlier, racer Rachael Blackmore was at the top.
Only five times before in the award’s 70-year history has a footballer emerged victorious. Erling Braut Haaland is sixth and follows in the footsteps of, among others, Eusebio, Pelé and Ronaldo and Cristiano Ronaldo.
It is the public who choose the BBC award winners. The award will be presented at a formal reception later this month.
The award is given to non-British athletes who are deemed to have made a significant contribution to their sport in the past year.
