Newcastle cheered for an important victory
Newcastle can go all the way into next season’s Champions League with a win against Brighton on Thursday night, and it opened on a high note. After 23 minutes they deservedly took the lead after massive pressure, although unlucky Deniz Undav headed the ball into his own net.
In extra time in the first half, Dan Burn made it 2-0 to Newcastle after a free kick.
But Brighton – who are also fighting for a European place next season – didn’t give up, and took to the pitch with a completely different pressure after the break. Six minutes into the second half, Undav evened his own goalscoring record by scoring for his own team and reducing the score to 2-1.
However, it became a Newcastle night. After 89 minutes, Callum Wilson put it 3-1 after a brilliant backroom run, in which he stayed on the right side of the offside line. Less than two minutes later, Wilson was the last to have the ball when Bruno GuimarĂ£es added to make it 4-1.
With this victory, Newcastle consolidated third place in the standings, but the championship position is still not completely secure. Four teams qualified for the Champions League, and Newcastle can still be chased by Manchester United and Liverpool. In this case, Liverpool are depending on winning their last two matches. A win in the last league round was enough for Newcastle.
