The “Unknown” team took over the top of the Spanish table
Under the shadow of Barcelona and Espanyol, Girona FC emerged as the new big team in Catalonia.
In 2017, they rose to the Spanish top division and today they have once again taken over the top of the La Liga standings.
They did so after a 3-0 win over Alavés on Monday night.
Ukraine’s Artem Dovbyk put Girona ahead after 23 minutes of play at home. Shortly before halftime, Portu doubled the Catalan team’s lead.
After the break, the visiting team from the Basque Country looked for a reduction, but Dovbyk actually scored the third goal of the match with a penalty kick.
That was also the final result, and with three points, Girona was suddenly two points clear of second-place Real Madrid.
Last week they won for the first time over “big brother” Barcelona in La Liga.
They thank Manchester City for their success. In 2017 they joined their global network, and City Football Group owns 44.3 percent of Girona.
Among other things, it gives the team access to young talent from City and Pep Guardiola’s reserve players. City also helped in the talent search that led to today’s signing of the two-goal scorer. Links with Manchester also run strong in the family. Guardiola’s brother Pere is the club’s chairman.
