Rudi Völler will become the new sporting director of the German national team. The 1990 world champion replaces Oliver Bierhoff, who resigned in December following Hansi Flick’s side’s botched showing at the World Championships in Qatar. The German Association announced it today.
“I am very happy that Rudi Völler will take on this challenging assignment. With his resume, achievements and great personality, he is the ideal solution for German football.” said union vice president Hans-Joachim Watzke in a statement.
The 62-year-old Völler worked for the national team as a coach from 2000-2004. Most recently, he served as sporting director at Leverkusen.
As a player, he completed 90 matches in a Germany shirt and scored 47 goals. In addition to the world title, he has silver medals from WC in 1986 and EC in 1992.
“After many extraordinary years at Bayer Leverkusen, I am returning to a place where I have experienced great times as a coach. I approach my new job with the national team with great gratitude, desire and motivation.” Voller said.
His task is to prepare German footballers with Flick for the home Euros in 2024. They have already been knocked out in the base group at the world championships in Qatar.
Depay replaced Suárez with Griezmann. He’s been training in Madrid under Simeone…
