Everton’s Andros Townsend has visited talk sport and came with a very small tirade towards Jürgen Klopp, and ironically opened up the winger with the following statement:
– I love how Jürgen Klopp has once again managed to get what he wanted.
The theme of the conversation is that the Premier League, like the rest of the world, will now allow each team to make five player changes in a single game. To date, England’s top division lags behind the rest as there has not been a required majority among the clubs to introduce the scheme. They think that the top club, which has the widest home, has a big advantage. But when FIFA made it permanent, the Premier League eventually gave in.
Townsend doesn’t seem too excited, and he blames Klopp for the fact that the team can now make five changes.
– She has been whining for several years. They had been resisted, but in the end the others gave in and made sure he got his five catches. And he’ll probably only continue to use two or three substitutions in the biggest games, said Townsend, who believes Liverpool and Manchester City have seen that they don’t always use all three substitutions.
– Being a little unfair
The Everton man believes the top teams will benefit the most from the extra trade-off in matches against the bottom teams.
– In games against teams like Crystal Palace and Brentford, when they didn’t manage to break it. It was 0-0 and they had eleven men behind the ball. But then you can include five world-class players with healthy feet who can change the game. “There, I think it would be a little unfair,” said the 30-year-old, who has past spells at Tottenham, Newcastle and Crystal Palace.
Townsend seems to have grown tired of Klopp trying to get a foothold for his views on football.
– In the last few seasons, we have seen that he constantly talks about it, about polls, and in the end he gets what he wants. Last season he also talked a lot about the schedule and moaned and complained. And suddenly BT Sport set Liverpool to play a game on Saturday night, something I’ve never seen in the Premier League. So all the complaining has often resulted in him getting what he wanted, Townsend said.
Has received the support of the player association
Townsend seems unaware that his own union, the PFA players’ union, has also gone to great lengths to introduce five permanent substitutes. With more and more games over the course of a year for players, all pointing towards five substitutions and a bigger squad of players on matchdays, and opposing Premier League clubs finally had to bow.
Klopp has previously stated that the Premier League has a responsibility to protect its players while the fixture program is running as it is.
As for the point Townsend made about the game on Saturday night, changes will also be made there next season. If a team plays a match in Europe on Wednesday night, they will qualify for a controversial start to the game the following Saturday. Instead, BT Sport will move the game to Saturday night to give the team better recovery time.
And in the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City, where they had five substitutes, Klopp opted to use four. Pep Guardiola only made one substitution.
