Imprisoned Italian mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro died of cancer

Messina Denara was arrested by police in January this year after three decades on the run. He was arrested on his way to one of Palermo’s most prestigious clinics, where he was supposed to undergo chemotherapy.

Denaro was treated in a prison hospital in L’Aquila in central Italy after his arrest. On Saturday night, ANSA reported that the mafia boss was in a coma. The doctors gave him no hope and stopped him from artificial nutrition.

The Italian press calls Messina Denaro the last big boss of the Sicilian mafia. He took over leadership of Cosa Nostra after previous bosses Bernardo Provenzano in 2006 and Salvatore Lo Piccolo a year later were arrested.

Messina Denaro has been hiding from justice since 1993. He was sentenced to life in prison for the 1993 bombings in Florence, Rome and Milan, which killed ten people, and for his role in the murder of two prominent judges, Giovanni Falcone. and Paolo Borsellino, in 1992.

Prosecutors also charged him in connection with numerous other murders linked to the Italian mafia. Until his arrest, he was among the ten most wanted criminals in the world.
