Ingvild Flugstad Østberg – Failure for the Norwegian press

Internal comments: This is a comment. The comments reveal the author’s position.

ONE one of the strongest Norwegian female skiers of all time is back on top of the world after almost four years of close combat with herself.

No medals in the opening of the WC distance, but today there is another opportunity to achieve the best result in the 10km freestyle. After all, the most important thing has been done:

  • This WC trip means the end of the nagging uncertainty as to whether all the hard work will have sporting value.

Because the journey back was not only physically difficult. Along the way, it must have challenged Ingvild’s self-image.

But he has finished, and can continue this world championship with renewed confidence that he can do it:

It’s not the medal that should define mesaid Ingvild after he recovered at the end of the first competition and ran for a deserved seventh place.

Then he didn’t just get his day job as a top athlete.

He had understood what made it worthwhile to exercise at this sky-high level as well.

THAT the same cannot be said of the Norwegian sports press’ coverage of Ingvild’s deeply personal and enduring drama. There has been a difference from the first consultation with the media.

Some of the biggest people in the bench press don’t think that Ingvild speaks well enough about her health challenges in November 2019:

  • He probably should have put more out there, so everyone could read every little detail in capital letters on the medical cards.

What medical education or other knowledge forms the basis of the health advice of some of Norway’s most renowned sports commentators, their readers may never know.

However, they can read that there is a “high”say “a” but not factor “b”.» at a press conference in Beitostølen where a tearful Ingvild tries to open up about a problem he himself cannot understand or solve.

BUT These real NRK people very moving and brave session from Ingvild, meant to get a sense of most of what the ski star is striving for:

There was great respect to sit alone in front of the press corps during such a difficult period of his sports career. But here, unfortunately, not enough, established he was amazing, and proceeded with a diagnosis of the requirements that should automatically come with being a Norwegian sporting hero with a starting ban due to your health:

By avoiding desire or being allowed to talk about the real reasons, one falls short of a very important role model criterion for a sports star: Dare to display courage, even more than others expect of you, conclude NRK sports commentator.

Maybe that’s when we can all conclude that we should be expected more reflection and consideration from a central voice in Norwegian sports journalism.

For the first result of the star’s honesty. it is real badly done to Ingvild.

AND The media’s indiscreet treatment continues while the main character struggles to find a balance between the daily extremes of nutrition and exercise.

When Ingvild made a brief but unsuccessful comeback on the ski track two years later, several big men in the sports press followed up with a very personal medical diagnosis of what was bothering Ingvild:

Østberg succeeded. But there’s still something in the look that seems a lack of belief that it’s time to try to return to the top level.says leading sports pundit NRK.

But hardly on the interpretation of signals from the eyes of sports heroes.

THAT it would be unwise to include such nonsense in it essential debate about what a tough challenge for often goes hand in hand with being on top of the world in endurance sports. Likewise in all other sports where the number of kilograms can be a factor behind the results.

It’s just stupid journalism, and Ingvild Flugstad Østberg should get more of it from the Norwegian sports media:

Unfortunately it is necessary to ask a few questions about Ingvild Flugstad Østberg’s privileges, write VG sports commentator before the Olympics last winter when Ingvild took part in the national team’s final training camp to give Therese Johaug maximum recharge.

I doubt many of those who struggle to find balance in their daily meals feel that they are very privileged.

WITH a job in the Norwegian top-flight sport, Ingvild does have the advantage of a functioning support system, but also the stresses of his personal struggles are quickly becoming common news.

Like when even one of the grown men of sports journalism is at the pre-Christmas press conference where Ingvild beams with glee that he has passed his medical certificate, deeply interested in his routine. on the bathroom scale:

How often do you weigh yourself Ingvild?asked the reporter.

You probably have nothing to do with ithe replied.

Maybe annoyed.

OR Possible cursed this is how disc lover Jessica Diggins looked when a New York Times commentator at the last Olympics focused her coverage on the body of the American sports hero:

In a sport where so many women have huge shoulders and thighs, Diggins looks featherweight in her competition attire. It’s not easy to see where he gets his strength from, write commentator; an experienced male sports journalist.

And journalism like that is the same Embarrassed in the United States as in Norway.
