Irena Szewińska is the biggest star of Polish sport. Polish and world athletics legend specializing in sprint running and long jump. He is a seven-time Olympic medalist, a three-time gold medalist and a dozen-time world record holder in the 100, 200, 400 and 4×100 meters.
The results of the Polish sprinter entered the Guinness Book of Records. In 1974, United Press International voted Irena Kirszenstein-Szewińska the best athlete in the world. In 1998, in the “Polityka”, “Przegląd Sportowy” and “Forge” plebiscites, he was recognized as the number 1 figure in 20th century Polish sport. Four times he won the “Przegląd Sportowy” plebiscite for the 10th Polish Athlete of the Year.
He has won on the Golden Spikes ranking seven times. In 1981, he was elected to the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame – an international hall of fame for athletes of Jewish descent. He also received the Kalos Kagathos Medal which is awarded to outstanding people who have also achieved success outside of sports. In May 2016, he was awarded the Order of the White Eagle by President Andrzej Duda.
In 1964 in Tokyo, on her Olympic debut, Szewińska, then still Kirszenstein, not yet an experienced runner, took part in the 4 x 100 meter relay. Together with his friends, he defeats favored American women and takes gold. The Polish woman set a new world record in this run with a time of 43.6 seconds. In the individual competition, Szewińska also had great success. He won two silver medals, in the 200 meter dash and the long jump.
– When I started with an eagle on my chest, I felt great pride. I am proud to represent my country. I always give my best, said Irena Szewińska on Radio Poland.
