Giorgia Meloni, leader of the far-right Brothers . party italian, who won parliamentary elections, was officially appointed prime minister of Italy on Friday. The mission of establishing a government was entrusted to him by the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, in a ceremony at the presidential palace at the Quirinal Palace in Rome. The government was sworn in on Saturday. Meloni was the first female head of government in Italy. His cabinet would be the most right-wing since World War II.

– I swear allegiance Republic, obey the law and the constitution. I will carry out my mandate and duties only for the benefit of the Nation – said the new prime minister on Saturday.

There are 6 women among the 24 ministers. Antonio Tajani, former president of the European Parliament, became deputy prime minister and head of diplomacy. The second deputy prime minister and minister of infrastructure is the head of the League, Matteo Salvini. Giancarlo Giorgetti, a member of Mario Draghi’s previous government, was appointed Minister of Economy and Finance.

Giorgia Meloni’s sister-in-law, Francesco Lollobrigida, received the portfolio of the Minister of Agriculture. The centre-right coalition was formed by the Italian Brotherhood party led by Giorgia Meloni, Liga Matteo Salvini and Forza Italia led by Silvio Berlusconi. Nine ministries were taken over by politicians from the Meloni party, five by the Liga and five by Forza Italia. The next five ministries will be taken over by technocrats.

Congratulations also from Ursula von der Leyen. The head of the European Commission wrote that he relied on “constructive cooperation in areas of the challenges we face together”.

“I look forward to working together within NATO and the EU. The Lithuanian-Italian partnership is vital in our pursuit of peace, security and prosperity!” – wrote Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausda.

“Congratulations to Giorgia Meloni, who has just become Italy’s first female prime minister. I look forward to working together within NATO and the EU and deepening the strong ties between our countries,” added Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

Congratulations to Meloni also come from the right wing, Eric Zemmour. “Congratulations Giorgia Meloni,” he wrote.

At the age of 15, Meloni joined a group of youth who came from neo-fascist groups. Then he became a member of the council in Rome. At the age of 29, he won his first election to the Chamber of Deputies. At the age of 31, he became youth minister in Silvio Berlusconi’s government – becoming the youngest person to hold such a position in the country’s history.

He is also known for his controversial speech from October 2019, which Duda refers to. – There are people who want us to be “parent 1”, “parent 2”, LGBT type, citizen X. These are all codes. But we are not code. We are human and we will defend our identity (…). I’m Georgia! I am a woman! I am a mother! I’m Italian! I am a Christian! You didn’t take it from me! – shouted the politician from the stage.

Meloni is against granting rights to LGBT+ people, is against abortion and wants to introduce stricter migration policies. The politician is often accused of belonging to the National Fascist Party led by Benito Mussolini. Meloni himself admired the dictator in his youth, repeatedly recalling the slogan “God, homeland, family” sung during Mussolini’s time.

After the election, Giorgia Meloni announced close cooperation with Poland government, as well as in the European Union.
