Jakob Ingebrigtsen is the fifth best in the world

Jakob Ingebrigtsen, 22, has been voted by Track and Field News “the bible of athletics” as the world’s fifth best athlete in 2022 – and almost certainly the best in both the 1,500 and 5,000 meters.

REVENGE: Jakob Ingebrigtsen (22) finished “only” second in the 1500 meters in the WC final at Eugene, but got his revenge in the 5000 meters (pictured). She went on to win two European Championship gold medals and 1500 finals in the Diamond League.

The American monthly magazine (paper) was founded in early 1948. It has high acclaim in the world of athletics and the latest issue is completely devoted to the selection of the male and female athletes of the year for 2022.

The athlete of the year in all athletic training is also ranked in the “bible” of athletics. This is the 63rd time that Track and Field News has named a “Male Athlete of the Year”, in the form of a ballot among 31 international athletic experts – on a rating scale of 1 to 10.

US-born Swedish pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis, 23, has received 28 of 31 “first votes” and certainly topped the men’s selection.

Sondre Guttormsen from Norway (23) – who survived runner-up in the Diamond League finals behind Duplantis – voted fifth pole vaulter of the year, behind Duplantis, Chris Nielsen (USA), EJ Obiena (Philippines) and Thiago Braz (Brazil). Compatriot Pål Haugen Lillefosse (21) is number 10 on the list.

The Bergen native won a bronze medal at the European Athletics Championships, placing at number 60 VG Top 100 List 2022 (Guttormsen out of the 100 list) and was awarded the “Breakthrough of the year” during Olympiatoppens and NRK’s Sports gala last weekend.

“Female athlete of the year” was named for the 48th time by Track and Field News. US world record holder (50.68 in WC), Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (23), has received 27 of 31 “first votes” and is ahead as the winner of the women’s election as Duplantis of the men’s election.

Three experts have cast first, second and third votes respectively to Jakob Ingebrigtsen. 15 believes he is the fourth (7th) and fifth (8th) best athlete of the year. Fifth place overall, behind Duplantis, Alison dos Santos, Brazil (400 m hurdles), Eliud Kipchoge, Kenya (marathon) and Noah Lyles, USA (200 m), was justified as follows:

“Once again the youngest of our top 10 (…) Ingebrigtsen again made it big (“big splash”) in the 1500/mile and 5000 meters, which earned him the number one spot at both distances. The Nordic ace was beaten in the 1500 meters (WC ) most important of the year, but made up for it by winning five other races (1500 m) and finishing sixth on the all-time best list for the mile (1609 meters) (…).

Jakob Ingebrigtsen was thus also the winner of the Track and Field News votes for the 1500 m/mile and 5000 meters, ahead of Jake Wightman – his 1500 meter leader in the WC final – and Nicholas Kipkorir in the 5000 meters.

He’s number two – behind Manchester City’s Erling Braut Haaland – on VG Top 100 List for 2022. He is named The name of the sport of the year 2022 by Norwegian sports journalist. During the Sports Gala, he received the award for Male Athlete of the Year.

Karsten Warholm is the fifth best 400 meter hurdles in 2022, according to the poll.

Norwegian Olympic gold winner and world record holder (45.94) was injured in his season debut and barely made it to the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, where he finished 7th in the final – which was won by “Men’s hurdler of the year” Alison dos Santos . The Brazilian, who won a bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, also won the Diamond League final by running three times in under 47 seconds.

According to Track and Fields News, Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal was the ninth best female 5000 meter runner last year. He’s coming 8th place in the WC final at a distance. A month ago he won – like Jakob Ingebrigtsen – the European Championship cross country in Italy.

Eivind Henriksen is ranked fourth in the world in practice, behind Wojciech Nowicki (Poland, WC silver medalist), Pawel Fajdek (V gold medal, Poland) and Bence Halasz (Hungary). The hammer thrower who won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics won 2022 WC bronze medal. A month later he won it European Athletics Championships in Munich.
