Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum lowered the marathon record set by Eliud Kipchoge during the Berlin Marathon in 2022.
Kiptum picked up the pace in the final kilometers of the Chicago Marathon and sprinted to the finish line in 2:00.35.
He also lowered the world record of his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge (38), namely 2.01.09. He set it during the Berlin marathon last year.
Kiptum is now the fastest in the world with a distance of 42,195 meters. Never before has anyone come close to running a marathon with two hours to spare in an official race.
His compatriot Benson Kipruto was second during the Chicago marathon with a time of 02.04.02.
Number three is Bashir Abdi from Belgium with a time of 02.04.32.
Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands won in the women’s sector with a time of 02.13.44.
Kiptum has run three marathons in his career, all of which were completed in the last 10 months.
There’s the Valencia marathon in Spain in December with a time of 2.01.53, and then the London marathon in April with a time of 2.01.25. He won both races.
In doing so, he has recorded three of the six fastest times over the distance in his three races.
There is an unofficial record for the marathon. The time was 1.59.40, and was set by Kipchoge in a street race with a hare. This is the only time a human has run under two hours, but because it was not a competition, it is not considered an official marathon record.
