Until Friday, people can bring candles to the Olomouc Governorate, which will serve the Ukrainian people suffering under Russian aggression. Before the Russian invasion, around 15,000 Ukrainians fled to the Olomouc region since last February. They found a safe base here. Authorities in the region recorded the biggest influx of refugees last March, shortly after the start of the massive Russian offensive on…
Russia invaded Ukraine a year ago. The country is now frozen, with many areas without power or experiencing significant power and hot water cuts. That’s why the Light for Ukraine collection was created, in which volunteers collect candles to help the attacked country. Donors can now also take them to the center of the Olomouc region.
“After removing the Advent wreath, we often put the unburned candle in the drawer, with the understanding that we will use it another time. What if next time is now? Every candle you bring to us at the county office can help those who really need it.” urged the governor of the Olomouc region Josef Suchánek (PirSTAN).
From the collected materials, volunteers make what are called trench candles, which require cans, cardboard, and wax. The candle can burn for several hours and heat the room up to four degrees. Candles in Ukraine will help ordinary people in shelters, as well as soldiers at the front.
“Trench candles in tins were used by soldiers in World War II. It was proven that these little helpers could create a lot of heat and light.” added the Governor.
The public can bring candles to the Kanwil building until Friday, 24 February. According to the press release with ntea, cookies, light candles or glasses are also suitable. Volunteers make the best use of candles with a wider volume. People can also carry cans of carefully washed food made of hard metal such as peas, tomatoes or chickpeas. A box with the inscription Light for Ukraine was ready in the entrance hall of the governor’s office at the entrance to the dining room.
