United knocked out – FC Copenhagen next
The stage is set for a huge clash when Manchester United face Bayern Munich at Old Trafford on Tuesday night in the Champions League.
United were in last place in their group before the game. Therefore, they can do nothing but win, and at the same time hope that the group runners-up, FC Copenhagen, will draw against Galatasaray.
It turns out it’s not like that. Kingsley Coman silenced everyone at Old Trafford when he scored from close range, following a classy pass from Harry Kane. The match ended 1-0 for Bayern.
FC Copenhagen won 1-0, and with that Denmark continued in the Champions League with Bayern Munich.
Therefore, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Birger Meling who are currently injured will also play championship football in the new year. Elyounoussi was substituted in extra time on Tuesday.
This means that Manchester United finished fourth in the group, which did not result in more Champions League or Europa League games.
Harry Maguire went off injured after 40 minutes.
United have not progressed beyond the quarter-finals of the Champions League since the 2018/19 season. The last time a big club reached at least the semi-finals was when they lost the final against Barcelona in 2010/11.
