Bratislava – Ukraine will not continue its complaint against Slovakia at the World Trade Organization (WTO) due to the ban on Ukrainian grain imports to Slovakia. Referring to the statement of the Slovak Ministry of Agriculture, Slovak media reported this today. Bratislava and Kyiv have agreed on a grain trading system, until it is launched, Slovakia will continue to implement a ban on imports of four agricultural commodities from Ukraine. However, it is not clear when the system can be launched.
Ukraine filed a WTO complaint against Slovakia, Poland and Hungary over their decision to continue the embargo on Ukrainian wheat imports.
In an interview with his Slovak counterpart Joref Bíreš, Ukrainian Agriculture Minister Mykola Solskyj promised, according to Bratislava, that Kyiv would stop actions related to lawsuits against Slovakia and stop imports of Slovak agricultural commodities into Ukraine.
Slovakia, where early parliamentary elections will be held next week, on Friday decided to unilaterally extend a ban on imports of wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower seeds from Ukraine. The official government of Prime Minister Ľudovít Ódor did this in response to similar actions by Hungary and Poland and after the European Commission did not extend the embargo on imports of such goods to EU countries neighboring Ukraine.
The Slovak Ministry of Agriculture has now stated that Bíreš and Solskyj have agreed to create a grain trading system based on the issuance and control of permits.
Poland, which is awaiting parliamentary elections in mid-October, is at odds with Kyiv over its own embargo on Ukrainian wheat imports. Warsaw announced late Wednesday that it would no longer supply weapons to Ukraine. Like Slovakia, Poland is one of Ukraine’s supporters, having resisted the Russian invasion for more than a year and a half.
