In a meeting with voters in Świdnik, Mateusz Morawiecki referred to Volodymyr Zełenski’s words. At the UN General Assembly in New York, the President of Ukraine, among other things, criticized Ukraine’s neighboring countries which periodically block exports of Ukrainian agricultural products.
– Worryingly, some parties in Europe are playing solidarity in political theater, turning the wheat issue into a thriller. It may seem like they are playing their own role, but in reality they are helping set the stage for the Moscow actor, the Ukrainian leader said in his speech on Tuesday. Zelensky did not name the countries he was talking about, but politicians from the Polish government and opposition said the Ukrainian president was talking about Poland.
– I want to tell President Zelensky not to insult Poland anymore – said the head of government in Świdnik. – Poland will never allow this, and defending Poland’s good name is not only my duty and honor, but also the most important task of the Polish government. We will defend all our arguments in the current geopolitical context and we know how these arguments must be shaped, the Prime Minister added at the rally.
The head of government stated that “he knows and we all know that there is a war going on in Ukraine for the security of Europe,” and Poland is helping by arranging arms shipments. – Now, first of all, we will arm ourselves, but the hub in Rzeszów is operational and will operate together with our allies – he stressed.
Dispute over wheat from Ukraine
In recent days, relations between Poland and Ukraine have deteriorated. The reason is the problem of transporting Ukrainian grain. Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the blockade of transport routes through the Black Sea have made European Union countries bordering Ukraine, such as Poland, Slovakia and Hungary, the main transit countries for Ukrainian grain transport. However, wheat is shipped to these countries rather than overseas, causing a significant drop in agricultural product prices. In early May, the European Commission imposed a ban on imports of wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflowers from Ukraine to Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. The restrictions were in effect until June 5 and then extended until mid-September. The embargo ended on September 15.
On September 16, the Polish government’s regulation on an indefinite ban on imports of Ukrainian agricultural products to Poland came into force. Similar decisions were also made by the governments of Hungary, Slovakia and Romania. Agricultural products from Ukraine can still transit through our country.
At the start of the week, authorities in Kiev announced that they had filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against Poland, Hungary and Slovakia in connection with the extension of the embargo on Ukrainian agricultural products by those countries. On Tuesday, a WTO spokesperson confirmed that the complaint had been received. The first step in a case like this is to request a consultation.
