The Swedish cross-country sensation forced Vasaloppet into action
Swedish super talent Alvar Myhlback (17) surprised with eighth place in this year’s Vasalopp. The sensation now results in a permanent change to the starting rules.
Expressen wrote that the Swedish Ski Federation rules had been changed as a result of Myhlback’s pang debut in the traditional long distance race from Sälen to Mora.
Previously, skiers could not participate in races longer than 50 kilometers until they were 19 years old. This creates a challenge for Myhlback when he looks to go to Vasaloppet this winter after showing good form up front. This race is nine miles long.
After seeking an exemption from the rule, the 16-year-old Swede was granted his wish to participate, and Myhlback responded in kind by placing eighth.
Now the Swedish Ski Federation has decided that in the future there will be no restrictions on the distance runners who can compete, provided they have an international starting permit.
– This rule has been around for a long time, and has never been discussed before, Ludvig Remb, competition coordinator at the Swedish Ski Federation, told Expressen.
He also emphasized that last winter’s episode of Myhlback started a debate that has now led to a change in the rules. (NTB)
