The star goalkeeper was injured after 28 seconds in England’s home defeat
Mary Earps didn’t get the birthday match she hoped for. The England goalkeeper suffered a hip problem in the opening minutes of the 1-2 draw against France.
He sat on the grass of St. James’ Park at Newcastle after 28 seconds. Then Earps just passed the ball to his teammate without being distracted.
The Manchester United goalkeeper underwent treatment on his right hip for several minutes on the field. He woke up with tears in his eyes and tried to continue playing, but it quickly became clear that it wasn’t going to work.
After eight minutes, Earps was replaced by Hannah Hampton. It came in his 50th match for England.
In 2022, the home keeper helped win the EC, and last year Spain suffered a narrow defeat in the final in the WC.
Friday’s match is part of qualifying for next year’s EC finals in Switzerland. Beth Mead gave hosts England the lead, but Élisa De Almeida made it 1-1 at the break.
After switching sides, Marie-Antoinette Katoto became the winner of the French match. France stands with the full pot (nine points) after three rounds, while Sweden and England have four points.
Ireland are last with no points. The two best teams from the group will go straight to the European Championship play-offs in Switzerland next year, while the other two must qualify for the play-offs.
