NRK: Three World Cup hotels denied gay rooms in Qatar

It shows reviews NRK has been carried out in collaboration with SVT Sweden and DR Denmark.

During the FIFA congress in March, President Gianni Infantino assured that everyone is welcome, “even when we talk about LGBTQ+”.

69 hotels were contacted via email or phone. Three did not accept gay, 20 answered “yes, but with restrictions”, 33 did not mind, while the last 13 did not respond or are currently working as a quarantine hotel.

– This is of course unacceptable and does not match what the World Cup committee had promised, that there would be legal security guarantees (for gays, editors note) during the championship, said president Lise Klaveness of the Norwegian Football Association.

– FIFA is confident that all necessary measures will be taken for LGBT+ supporters, so that they, like everyone else, can feel welcome and safe during the championship, FIFA replied in an email.

The three hotels that responded were not called back. One hotel replied that it was the hotel’s official policy, another said it did not defeat the attitude of the World Cup organizers. The latter stands alone and says it follows Qatari law.

Homosexuality is banned in Qatar. According to Amnesty, it is punishable by seven years in prison.
