TikTok has announced that it will begin removing videos that oppose climate change.
The popular website reports that it is in the process of updating its policy against disinformation. All content posted that will “undermine the established scientific consensus” or contain misinformation about the climate crisis will be removed. The platform’s new policies will help “increase accurate climate discussions” and reduce harmful misinformation.
The changes will be implemented ahead of Earth Day on Saturday, an annual global event that celebrates the importance of devoting time, resources and energy to tackling global warming.
For all users looking for climate-related content, TikTok will also introduce a new feature that will redirect to trusted and verified information obtained in collaboration with the United Nations.
Over the past year, under pressure from the government over privacy and security concerns, a Chinese app has been forced to tighten its policies on harmful content.
