The German president visits American soldiers stationed in Germany in Grafenwoehr, Bavaria. “What you are doing, what each of you is doing here has existential significance for the security of my country, my citizens, our continent and our alliances,” Frank-Walter Steinmeier said.

The American generation was stationed in Germany. – We, the Germans, owe thanks to all these people – said the president. In his speech, Steinmeier emphasized the strength of the transatlantic alliance in light of Russia’s aggressive war in Ukraine.

– We are united and determined to defend freedom, democracy and international law. We are united in our support for Ukraine, he said. As he adds, consistency and determination have never been as important in the face of Russian aggression.

“We will invest more”

The president assured that Germany would do everything to maintain this unity. – Just as we rely on you, you can also rely on us – he stressed. Germany stands by its ally’s commitments and knows it must do more to fulfill them. – We will invest more, provide more troops in the eastern wing of NATO and we will modernize the German armed forces comprehensively, Steinmeier committed.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier was the first German head of state in more than 25 years to visit American troops stationed in Germany. At the start of his visit, he was greeted with military honors by US Ambassador Amy Gutmann and General Darryl Williams, Commander-in-Chief of the US Army in Europe and Africa.

Since the end of World War II, tens of thousands of American troops have been stationed in Germany on a permanent basis.

12,500 troops were stationed in nearby Grafenwoehr and Vilseck. It is one of the largest US military bases in Europe. Soldiers feel at home here, and some already have families. In addition, the American training ground is very important to the region as an employer for the local population.
