Hovland keeps half the important points: – What are you made of?
After Viktor Hovland and Europe got off to a perfect start on the opening day of the Ryder Cup by winning all four of their opening foursome matches, the match became more even on Friday afternoon.
Hovland and his partner Tyrrell Hatton played there against the American duo of Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. They followed each other and took turns leading on the first eleven holes.
The American duo then won the next two holes to take a two-hole lead with just five remaining.
But Hovland and Hatton fought back, and were the best on holes 14 and 16. Thus the match continued to hole 18.
There, Thomas played on target and almost got a birdie. Therefore, either Hovland or Hatton had to make a putt nearly ten meters long to split the match.
Hovland made the putt from the top of the hill and the ball finally rolled, eliciting great joy from Hovland himself and the crowd.
– What are you made of, exclaimed Viaplay commentator Joakim Mikkelsen as the birdie putt went in.
Thomas also made his birdie putt soon after and thus the score was half a point for each team.
In other fourball matches, there was a European win in one game, while the Americans led in the other two.
In Friday morning’s foursome, Sweden’s Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Ã…berg won 4&3 against Max Homa and Brian Harman. Hovland made his Ryder Cup debut in 2021, where he played five matches for Europe. It ended with three losses and two draws.
