Mol and Sørum ready for semi-finals – eliminating legends off the pitch
The Norwegian beach volleyball team of Anders Mol and Christian Sørum are set to advance to the semifinals against Germany on Thursday.
– It was so much fun. OH MY GOD. We are so happy. So proud of the work we have done so far. Semifinals at the Olympics. Haven’t lost a set. Found a good flow. No, it feels so good, Anders Mol told NRK after the semi-finals were secured.
In less than 40 minutes, both players had their first match points. And the entire match was a demonstration of strength from the Norwegian side.
The Norwegian duo played fantastic against Spain in the quarter finals and started the match well. In the end the score was 2-0 in the set for Norway. The set scores were 21-16 and 21-17.
A 2-0 win in the quarter-finals means Norway have yet to drop a set so far in the tournament.
– It’s very rare. In the last two years we’ve mostly played 2-1. It’s nice to be able to manage and keep the 2-0, and save the energy we can expend, said Sørum.
Spain’s Pablo Herrera was playing in his sixth Olympics and holds the record for Olympic silver medals. But against Norway, the 42-year-old and his partner Adrian Gaviria fell short. And Pablo Herrera, who will retire after the Games, had to make sure he had his last shot of the tournament at 17-20. Norway took the second match point of the game and sent Herrera and Spain out of the Games.
The semifinals will be played on Thursday at 6 p.m.
